Bass drums and timpani beat out a slow, solemn rhythm over which we hear a solo oboe and horn playing a sad melody over modal chords. On the repeat, strings and snare drums are added to give a more dramatic, film music quality.
This would suit a historic production where a feeling of sadness is needed in a ritualistic scene.
