I’ve mentioned a few libraries providing MapKit alternatives for displaying maps such as RouteMe which works with many open source map formats, and WhirlyGlobe that allows you to create an interactive 3D globe using MapBox data.
None of those libraries will help you too much however if you find yourself already with an image that you want to use as a map.
Here’s a nice component called NAMapKit from Neil Ang that allows you to create MapKit style pins, and callouts and apply them to any image. NaMapKit also has some gesture based control built in for zooming and panning through the map.
You can find NAMapKit on Github here.
A nice easy way to turn any image into a map.
