Add Beautiful Text to Your Photos With Typic

An increasing number of apps are focused on making it easier for users to share their photos across social networks. Enter Typic, the latest one to enter the ring. Not only does it let you apply a filter to your image and share it with friends, you can also add your own caption in a gorgeous script.

So how does the app stack up compared to the rest of the crowd? Click “more” to check out the walk-through.

Readying a Photo

Upon opening the app for the first time you’ll immediately notice its sleek and minimalistic interface. The welcome screen shows only a random, Typic-generated image, and below that, a single button with a camera for an icon.

Typic's navigation is very minimalistic. You can take a photo or choose one from your device's library.

As it’s your only option, press the camera icon. This will then give you two options: You can take a photo, or choose one from your library. After you take or select a photo, the process is the same. You’ll be given the opportunity to scale and position the photo exactly to your liking.

Center and scale your photo however you like, and then select one of five different filters to apply.

Next, you’ll get to choose a filter for your photo. There are five to play with: JMS, Vanilla, Children, Saturn and B+W. Of course, you always have the option of not using any filter at all.

Adding a Caption

After you’ve decided on a filter, simply swipe the filters menu to the left. Scrolling horizontally like this will next reveal the caption menu. There are seven gorgeous scripts to choose from, and you can adjust the size of your text by simply tapping the plus and minus signs.

As you type your caption it will appear directly on top of the image. Tap the different fonts to try them out.

As you write or edit your caption, the text will appear directly on the image. I’d recommend typing your caption and then tapping through the different fonts to determine which one looks best.

It’s not immediately evident that you can also adjust the placement of the text by dragging your caption elsewhere on the image — something I figured out by accident. Tapping the square box in the upper left of your photo will recenter the caption at any time.

Making Changes

Scrolling horizontally to the right one more time will reveal the opportunity to adjust the text opacity and frame corners via sliders. Moving the frame slider to the left and right will make the frame corners more or less rounded.

Typic allows for further customization by allowing you to vary the text's opacity, frame corners and frame color.

On the same menu screen you can also increase or decrease the blurring of the image and change the frame from black to white or vice versa.

To go back and make any edits to your image, simply scroll horizontally to the left to recall previous menus, such as the filters and caption menus. Making changes is really that simple.

Sharing Your Typic

The final menu screen reveals ways of sharing your Typic: save to your device’s library; email; post to Facebook; post to Twitter; or export the image to Instagram or other pic-editing apps currently installed on your device. (For example, right now I have Instagram, Via.Me and Muzy on my iPhone.)

Save your photo or share it via email, Twitter, Facebook, or another photo-sharing app, such as Instagram or Via.Me.

Final Thoughts

What sets Typic apart from other similar apps is its well-executed simplicity. While some may balk at the fact that there are only a handful of filters and fonts to choose from, the upside is that it only takes a few seconds to get a photo from your iPhone’s library to the web. You don’t have to waste time or overcomplicate things by trying to make a selection from several dozen filters and fonts.

The smooth, side-scrolling navigation adds to the app’s ease of use. While your image remains static in the top three-fourths of the screen, you can scroll through the option menus quickly to edit your photo.

Not to mention, the finished product just looks so darn good. While Typic may not offer a multitude of customizations, the filters and fonts included were, in my opinion, excellent choices.

The app also gets bonus points for offering so many different ways to share photos. It can otherwise be a bit frustrating when an app includes Twitter but not Facebook, or vice versa. The email and save-to-device options are great, too, because they allow me to easily post a photo to my blog or send Typic-ed photos via MMS to friends.
