News: MapBox Platform Releases Official iOS SDK

Previously I mentioned the RouteMe mapping library allowing you to display maps on the iOS platform using a multitude of map sources. The MBTile format from MapBox is among the supported formats of the Route Me mapping library.

One of the great things about the MBTile format is that MapBox has provided an excellent tool for creating custom maps using the MBTile format known as TileMill.  While MapBox is a premium platform they do have a free option – cost depends on the number of map views, and storage space your app requires.

Today MapBox also came out with a new iOS SDK with a number of included examples, and as stated on the MapBox blog:

We’re proud to introduce our MapBox iOS SDK, a powerful open source tool that lets developers on Apple’s iPhone and iPad build custom, high performance maps with tight integration into MapBox Hosting, offline maps capabilities, embedded interactivity, and gorgeous customizability by leveraging our design studio TileMill.

You can download the new SDK, find some examples  and read more about it on the Mapbox blog here.

Be sure to check out the excellent TileMill app for designing beautiful apps too.
