Augmented reality is a topic that I’ve mentioned in a few times. In the past I have mentioned some excellent resources such as a tutorial on creating an augmented reality shooter game, a library that allows you to automatically take a MKMapView and turn it into an augmented reality map and the previous version of the Qualcomm AR SDK which was known as QCAR.
The SDK has been updated and renamed to Vuforia. For some time the SDK was in beta, but a new release version (technically release v1.58.8) has been released.
Overall it looks like a very significant update and from my testing the speed and accuracy has improved significantly along with a number of new features – but best of all the SDK remains free for iOS app developers.
Here’s a video showing this version of the SDK vs the previous release:
You can read about all the feature updates in the release notes here.
You can download the SDK along with the samples on Qualcomm’s AR site here (Signup Required).
Makes for a great way to get started with AR on the iOS playform.
