‘No news’ on Sri Lanka’s missing

People waiting for news of relatives in Vavuniya police centre - June 2011Two hundred people a day were permitted to make inquiries

Hundreds of people in Sri Lanka’s north who responded to a police announcement about relatives held in detention say they have been given no information.

Ten days ago police said they would give details about those detained in the war, which ended in May 2009.

BBC Sinhala has learned of only one man out of hundreds who went to the former war zone of Vavuniya and actually found out where his relative was.

Thousands of families are still seeking loved ones two years after the war.

Almost all of them are Tamils, living in the former war zone in desperation because of their missing husbands, sons or daughters, correspondents say. Some have been missing for many years.

Police say information will only be made available to “close relatives”.

Police spokesperson Prishantha Jayakody said three centres – in the north, south and in the capital, Colombo – which would provide details of people held by the police Terrorist Investigation Division (TID).

Many saw their loved ones forcibly conscripted by Tamil Tiger militants. Of these, correspondents say, many were thought to have come out of the war alive but were detained by the government and have not been seen since.

At the scene

They came in their hundreds in search of their loved ones. But almost all returned empty handed. Those who were unable to gather information of their missing relatives were desperate.

Journalists barred by the police were only able to talk to emotional relatives by the wayside.

One woman spoke of the search for her son. Despite contact with the Red Cross, the authorities and the president’s office, she had no news. She said she wishes she herself had died in the shelling in the war zone rather than escaping and living through this nightmare.

Many people cried as they told their story.

For many people the first worry was who could earn money for their family? Many of those missing were the sole breadwinners.

In Vavuniya, part of the former war zone, thousands went to find out the fate of their loved ones, our correspondent says. Because of the large numbers of people turning up, only 200 people a day were able to make inquiries.

“My 26-year-old son Pradeep was taken by the Criminal Investigation Department when he went to Colombo to get his passport. That’s all we know,” Mylu Shanmugathas from Tellipalai told BBC Sinhala’s Dinasena Ratugamage in Vavuniya.

He has been missing since 2008. Mr Shanmugathas has been to police stations, military camps and human rights offices in search of his son.

The man who was told where his son was immediately boarded the first train out of town to the southern city of Galle, where his son was being held, our correspondent says.

Others said they were looking for the sole breadwinner in their family.

“There is no one to provide for me. Who will look after me or care if I fall ill?” said one Tamil woman whose son had gone missing since being taken by police in 2007.

TID officials in Vavuniya say that they are unable to provide details of the “disappeared”.

Meanwhile in another northern town, Kilinochchi, people have tried to organise a demonstration asking where their missing relatives are.

The organisers told the BBC that the army obstructed the event, sending away more than half of the 150 parents who tried to attend before letting a smaller protest take place.

It was not immediately possible to reach the Sri Lankan military spokesman for comment.

The Committee for the Investigation of Disappearances Sri Lanka says that it has recorded details of more than 5,000 disappearances since 2006.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says about the same number of people are being held in “rehabilitation centres” on suspicion of being former Tamil Tigers.

Potter series to be sold as e-books

JK Rowling on Potter and the future of print and digital books

The seven Harry Potter novels are to be sold as e-books for the first time in October.

Author JK Rowling announced the series will also be available as audiobooks through a new website, Pottermore.

The interactive website will also feature new material which Rowling says she has been “hoarding for years”.

“This is such a great way to give something back to the fans who made Harry Potter such a huge success,” the author said.

The Harry Potter novels have sold more than 450 million copies through Bloomsbury in Britain, and Scholastic in the United States.

However the e-books – which will be available in several languages – will be published through Rowling’s Pottermore Publishing, rather than her print publishers which do not own the digital rights.

‘New stuff’

Pottermore will go live on 31 July – Harry Potter’s birthday.

Rowling told the BBC that the new material was being released online, rather than in a new book, because she did not have “a new story”.

“Most of this writing is material I generated while I was writing the books initially,” she said.

“It’s background, and lots of details that didn’t make it into the book.

“Some of it is new stuff in response to things fans have asked me over the years.”

The site, which Rowling said she had been working on for two years, promises to immerse users in the boy wizard’s world, offering opportunities for computer gaming, social networking and an online store.

Sections let users shop for wands in Diagon Alley, travel to Hogwarts from the imaginary platform at London’s King’s Cross train station and be sorted into Hogwarts’ school houses using the Sorting Hat.

One million users will initially be chosen to help develop the online world, before it is open to all users from October.

Rowling told reporters at the London Pottermore launch she had no intention of writing an eighth Harry Potter book.

“I do have closure with Harry. I’m pretty sure I’m done on the novel front, but it was fun while it lasted,” she said.

UK Libya operation costs ‘£260m’

RAF Tornado The UK has contributed to Nato’s operations over Libya

The cost of UK military operations in Libya has cost £250 million so far, government sources say.

Details are expected to be announced in a written ministerial statement on Thursday.

Last week, Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander said it could run “into the hundreds of millions” of pounds.

The UK has been contributing to Nato’s operation in Libya to enforce a no-fly zone since 19 March. The government had said it would cost tens of millions.

When military strikes against Col Muammar Gaddafi’s forces began, Chancellor George Osborne estimated that the cost of British involvement would be “in the order of tens of millions of pounds, not hundreds of millions”.

The Ministry of Defence will set out the most recent financial situation in the Commons.

Pressed by shadow chancellor Ed Balls about the issue of costs during Treasury questions in the Commons on Tuesday, Mr Osborne said the cost was being met by the Treasury special reserve and was “very much lower than the ongoing operation in Afghanistan”.

The government has clashed with military leaders recently over military operations in Libya.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Simon Bryant, the RAF’s second-in-command, said morale among personnel was “fragile” and their fighting spirit was being threatened by being over-worked.

Prime Minister David Cameron said on Tuesday that military leaders were “absolutely clear” the mission could be kept going for as long as necessary.

Murdered boy ‘was not protected’

Ryan Lovell-Hancox The couple had been caring for Ryan for a month when he died in 2008

A review has been carried out into the death of a three-year-old West Midlands boy who was murdered by a couple who were supposed to be caring for him.

Ryan Lovell-Hancox died on 24 December 2008 from a brain injury he received at the Bilston home of Christopher Taylor and Kayley Boleyn.

They were jailed for murder and child cruelty in July 2010.

Wolverhampton’s Safeguarding Children Board will release the findings of a serious case review at 0830 BST.

Ryan was inflicted with more than 70 injuries by the defendants who blamed each other for his injuries.

Ryan’s mother, Amy Hancox, who knew nothing of the abuse, had told the court during their trial that she had given Ryan to the pair to look after as she “was not coping”.

Woman held in phone-hacking probe

News of the World signPolice are probing claims News of the World staff illegally accessed public figures’ phone messages

Police investigating claims of phone hacking at the News of the World have arrested a woman in West Yorkshire.

The woman, 39, faces charges of conspiring to intercept mobile and voicemail messages.

The arrest was made as part of Operation Weeting, launched by the Met Police in January.

The paper’s former royal reporter Clive Goodman and private detective Glenn Mulcaire were jailed for intercepting messages from the Royal Family.

Police reopened their inquiry into the hacking claims after allegations that other public figures – including MPs – had their messages intercepted.

Since then, three News of the World journalists have been arrested.

News International, which owns the newspaper, issued a statement saying Thursday’s arrest did not relate to a current employee or a former full-time staff member.

“We have been co-operating fully with the police inquiry since our voluntary disclosure of evidence reopened the police investigation,” the statement said.

“Since then we have been determined to deal with these issues both on the criminal and civil side. In April we admitted liability in several civil cases and we are attempting to bring these to a fair resolution.”

Business Website

I want to run a subscription-based website where single and stepparents can meet each other (a bit like a dating website but without the naughty bits … although it’d be a good idea to have a dating one or them, too!). It needs a forum, opt in forms, exit pop ups and a link to an author blog. I want to sell my book and other products alongside, and it needs to be up and running by the end of August latest if I want to capitalise on publicity that my publisher is setting up for me.

I haven’t given much of an idea in terms of ‘feel’, but the websites I’ve been looking at mostly are “secondwivesclub.com”, “designer-life.com” and “mumsnet.com”. As the site needs to appeal to both men and women it can’t really be too flowery and feminine, but I’d like it to be attractive and ‘friendly’ nonetheless. I have no logo either – hope you can help with some ideas on that.

I imagine there are around a dozen pages and although I have mapped it out there are definitely a few holes in the planning so far – for example, the profile page form, and the second forum page .. I started to get a bit confused with what happens when and to whom and how. I’d really appreciate your getting back to me with a quote and any important questions you might have about the job.

Looking forward to speaking with you –

Jo

Local Screen Share

The desired project will include a downloadable application that will allow 2 or more people to share screens on a local Internet such as people that are on the same local net at home or at a meeting room, etc.
One person will be the lead and the others will be the listeners and it will be possible to change roles on the fly.
Session starts when the lead starts the application and decides on a password. Anyone else on the local net can start sharing by starting the application and providing the same password.
No need for voice interaction over ip or any special feature.
In the future it may be desired to add also smartphones eg iOS or android.

Logo

I need to create a logo for a website. Colour scheme attached. Logo should fit to the top left hand side of the website and will also be used for a non e-commerce website so design should not be restricted to fit an e-commerce site alone.

Ideally, I would like to see several samples and should be able to choose from the samples.
