The new iPhone 5 supports LTE

Apple has confirmed what many assumed: The newly announced iPhone 5 will support LTE, the faster network protocol that will keep your iPhone blasting through data.

Apple is calling its wireless “Ultrafast.” In the US, Apple says, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint will all support LTE. In Canada Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido and Virgin, plus lots of systems in Europe and Asia.

This means the new iPhone will support GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE. For comparison HSPA+ is 21Mbps, DC-HSDPA is 42Mbps, and LTE is a max of 100Mbps. Apple will be using a single chip for voice and data and a single radio chip as well. The iPhone 5 also supports technology introduced on the iPhone 4S, a dynamic antenna that automatically switches antenna connections to use the best oriented antenna for a particular signal.
