In this tutorial, we will explain how to a create vintage radio icon in Photoshop using simple shapes and layer styles. Let’s get started!
Tutorial Assets
The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial.

Step 1
Open Photoshop and create a new document sized at 1300 px wide and 1000 px high with resolution of 72 px/inch.
Step 2
Set Foreground and Background colors to #ededed and #c2c2c2, pick up Gradient Tool (G), choose Foreground to Background gradient and draw gradient from the top to the bottom.
Step 3
Use the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) with radius of 10px to draw rectangle. For the color use #32312f. This rectangle will represent the body of our radio.
Got to Edit > Transform > Perspective and adjust perspective. Use image below as reference.
Give this rectangle following layer styles: Inner Shadow, Inner Glow and Bevel and Emboss.
Step 4
In this step we’re going to add speaker. Let’s start by drawing one rounded rectangle using Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), with Radius set to 10px.
Select its path, hit Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + T, and move it down couple of pixels.
Choose Direct Selection Tool (A), select only points on the left of rectangle, and make rectangle a bit wider (hold Shift to make it straight).
Repeat this action until you create something similar like on the image below.
Set Fill to 0%, and apply layer styles.
Duplicate this layer, flip Horizontal (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal), and move it a bit to the right, to complete the speaker shape.
Group these layers into “Speaker” group.
Step 5
Let’s start on creating our buttons. Add new group on top and give it a name “on/off button”. Inside “on/off button” group, use the Ellipse Tool (U) to create a small circle. Set the layer’s Fill to 0% and apply Bevel and Emboss.
Duplicate this circle (Cmd/Ctrl + J). Set the duplicated shape layer’s color to the #b3b4ae color and Fill to 100%.
Open Layer Style panel and add: Inner Shadow.
Inner Glow.
Bevel and Emboss.
And Gradient Overlay.
Pick up Horizontal Type Tool (T) and add button name. For the color use #b3b4ae.
Step 6
Duplicate “on/off button” group and move it a bit to the right. Change the button name to “mw”, and also the group name to “mw button”.
Duplicate “mw button” group, move it a bit to the right, set the name of the button to “ukw”, and the name of the group to “ukw button”.
Open up Layer Style box to edit effects. Turn off Inner Shadow effect and add Drop Shadow, to create effect that button it’s not pressed.
Step 7
In this step we will be creating frequency tuning knob. Create new group on top, name it “tuning”, and inside that group draw cirlce with Ellipse Tool (U). For the color choose #b3b4ae.
Open Layer Style properties by double clicking on the layer, and add layer style effects.
Duplicate this layer, make it a bit smaller using Free Transform Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + T), clear layer styles,
And apply new ones.
Finally give this knob label “tuning”.
Step 8
Duplicate “tuning” group, scale it down a bit, change the name to “treble”, and position like on the image below.
Duplicate “treble” group twice, change the names to “bass” and “volume” and position it, using image below as reference.
Step 9
In this step we’ll create frequency box. Let’s start by creating white (#ffffff) rectangle.
Apply following layer styles to this rectangle.
Draw line using Line Tool (U), with Weight set to 2px, and color set to #515151.
Next, draw smaller line like on the image below.
Similar, like we did in Step 4, select path, hit Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + T, and move it up couple of pixels.
Duplicate again with Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + T. Repeat this until you have something like this.
Add frequency numbers (for the color use #515151).
Step 10
Using method explained in Step 9, create another another scale (use same color #515151).
Then draw 3 vertical red lines (#c30101) with Line Tool (U) and Weight set to 1px.
Add horizontal red lines (#c30101). Use Line Tool (U) to draw small line (Weight – 1px), then select its path, press Cmd/Ctrl + Alt + T on keyboard to duplicate, move few pixels up, and repeat this until you have something similar to the image below.
Again add frequency numbers. Use the same red color we used for lines.
Step 11
Invoke Line Tool (A) again, set Weight to 3px, color to #c30101, and draw frequency indicator.
Add Drop Shadow and Bevel and Emboss from Layer Styles.
Step 12
Select white rectangle, that we created first, when we started working on frequency box. Duplicate this layer and move it on top.
Set Fill to 0%, and add Inner Shadow, and Bevel and Emboss.
Create new layer on top, pick up Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), set Feather to 1px, and create selection.
Fill selection with any color,
Change Blend Mode to Linear Dodge (Add), Fill to 0%, and add layer styles: Inner Glow and Bevel and Emboss.
Click on the layers thumbnail to create selection around it, add new layer on top (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N),
Grab Polygonal Lasso Tool (L), make sure to select Intersect with selection, and create selection similar like on the image below.
Fill the selection with white (#ffffff) color, change Blend Mode to Screen, and Opacity to 30%.
Select all frequency layers and group them in one group.
Step 13
Open up Powered By Envato API logo (listed in Tutorial Assets) in Photoshop, grab only Envato logo, and import in our design. Scale it down and position like on the image below. Double click on layer to open Layer Style, and give this layer Color Overlay.
Create new layer on top, set Foreground color to white (#ffffff), and draw one Foreground to Transparent gradient using Gradient tool (G).
Create selection around radio body, and apply Layer Mask.
Change Blend Mode to Screen and lower the Opacity to 30%. This is what we have right now.
Select all groups and layers except background layer, and put them in one group named “radio”.
Step 14
We’re almost there. Create new layer just above background layer, name it “shadow”, set Foreground color to black (#000000), and using Round Soft Brush draw a straight line.
Set the Blend Mode to Overlay and Opacity to 90%.
Duplicate “radio” group, convert it to Smart Object, flip Vertical (Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical), and position below “shadow” layer. Use image below as reference.
Give this Smart Object Gaussian Blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur) with Radius set to 3px.
Add Layer Mask to this layer (“reflection layer”), set Foreground color to black (#000000), and using Gradient Tool (G), draw one Foreground to Transparent gradient, to mask out the bottom part of reflection. Finally lower the Opacity of "reflection layer" to 90%.
