TUAW TV Live: The new iPad (and Apple TV) episode

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock or under general anesthesia for the last few hours, you know that Apple today made some amazing announcements. There’s a new iPad, a new Apple TV, iPhoto for iOS, updated iWork for iOS, GarageBand, and iMovie, and even a new version of iOS — version 5.1.

Kelly “proprietress of the house of crackpot theories” Guimont will be my co-host today, and we invite you to join the IRC chat, sit back with a cold (or warm) one, and enjoy the show. I’m sure we’ll be having a pile of fun, since we’ll probably be trying to pre-order iPads while talking.

Below, you’ll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments.

If you’re driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you’re stuck in traffic, please don’t — keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App. It’s a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat.

We’ll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you’re seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you’ll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.

New Apple TV brings tighter Netflix integration

According to our sister site Engadget, one of the few new features of the new Apple TV is better Netflix integration. There is now higher resolution streaming available, 1080p like other platforms are receiving now. If you aren’t planning to get a new Apple TV, you might still enjoy the option of signup and payment directly through the new interface. I admit, I’m a bit disappointed the resolution won’t be Tim80p, as the above photo implies.

Apple iPad pre-orders now live in the US

Get out that plastic and point your browsers to Apple’s online storefront as iPad pre-orders are now live. If you want to get some of the retina-display goodness, then you better not delay. Demand will be high and likely outpace supply.

Note that Apple’s servers are getting slammed, so the site’s availability will be spotty for a while. Good luck!

Targus welcomes the next-generation iPad with seven new cases

Accessory manufacturer Targus wasted no time in announcing a line of seven new cases specifically for the new iPad. The cases appear in two separate lines — the “Slim and Elegant Cases” and the “Higher Utility Cases.”

Slim and Elegant Cases

Three of the new Targus cases fall under the Slim and Elegant line. The Simply Basic Cover (US$29.99, at right) encases the iPad in a very slim design, features a magnetic on/off feature and a soft cover lining to protect the screen. The Simply Basic Cover is available in graphite black, charcoal gray, orange peel, and indigo blue.

If you plan on using an Apple Smart Cover with your new iPad, the Vucomplete ($39.99, below) might be the perfect way to protect the back of your device. It snaps on the back of your iPad, and comes in basic graphite black.

The last case in this line is the Slim Case ($49.99, below), which works as a stand and case. Equipped with the magnetic on/off feature, the Slim Case is available in calypso pink, indigo blue, bittersweet red, bone white, charcoal gray and graphite black.

Higher Utility Cases

While the Slim and Elegant Cases are designed to provide the maximum amount of protection with a minimum of bulk and weight, the Higher Utility Cases are perfect for iPad owners who want more than just protection.

The Vuscape ($44.99, below) case provides a number of different viewing conditions, magnetic on/off, a water-resistant outside cover and soft lining, and storage for a stylus. It’s available in graphite black, bone white, charcoal gray, and calypso pink.

Perhaps one of the classiest of the designs introduced today is the Business Folio and Stand ($49.99). Available in black and charcoal gray, this folio-style case provides storage for a stylus or pen, business cards, and ID as well as the iPad. There’s also space for a notepad if you decide writing on your iPad isn’t fun enough, and Targus throws in a CleanVu cleaning pad to get those finger smears off of your screen.

The Versavu Case ($59.99) has been around for a while, but has been updated for the newest member of the iPad line. The Versavu comes with a 360-degree rotating mechanism for viewing the iPad in four different viewing angles. There’s storage for a stylus, and it comes in graphite black and charcoal gray. If those two colors don’t rock your boat, Targus also makes the case in two color combos: bone white and charcoal gray, and calypso pink and charcoal gray.

This case also comes in a Bluetooth keyboard version, unsurprisingly called the Versavu Keyboard Case ($99.99).

All of these Targus cases are available immediately at Targus.com and a number of online and traditional retailers.

New iPad models include high-speed LTE networking

As widely rumored, the new iPad models (one for Verizon and one for AT&T) announced today will offer several varieties of high-speed cellular wireless networking. iPads sold for use with those two carriers, plus Rogers, Bell and Telus in Canada, will work with an alphabet soup of fast connections: the 3G EVDO and HSPA standards (also on the iPad 2) plus the newer HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE standards.

All three of the newer standards are speed demons when compared to the 3G technologies. HSPA+ tops out at a theoretical maximum of 21 Mbps download speeds, and DC-HSDPA can hit a screaming 42 Mbps. Neither of them can stand up to LTE, however, which (in theory) can hit a scary-fast 73 Mbps of downlink speed. If you think the carrier networks are congested now, here’s some crystal ball forecasting: wait six months.

Another interesting tidbit about these hyperspeed iPad models is that they will support personal hotspot networking (with carrier approval). You could run a small network of five devices off your iPad’s fast connection; that’s great news for mobile professionals.

iPad pre-orders start today.

Apple announces third generation iPad starting at $499 (updated)

After months of anticipation, Apple has announced the third generation of the iPad. Prices are (all USD) $499/$599/$699 for Wi-Fi-only models in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. Models with LTE 4G cost $629/$729/$829 respectively for the same capacities.

The new iPad has a 2048×1536 retina display, which is 3.1 million pixels. By comparison, a 1080p display has 1920×1080 resolution. For more of the math behind retina displays, check out our post by Richard Gaywood. It also has an A5X processor and quad-core graphics, iSight Camera with a 5-megapixel backside camera, 5-element lens, IR filter and ISP built into the processor and 1080p video recording. Other features include voice dictation, which isn’t quite the Siri that everyone was expecting, but does support English (US, British, Australian), French, German and Japanese.

The new iPad will be available with 4G LTE on AT&T, Verizon, Rogers, Bell and Telus in the US and Canada. It will be able to be a personal hotspot if the carrier supports it.

Pre-orders are available today, and the updated iPad goes on sale March 16 in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. It’ll launch March 23 in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

And yes, it has a Home button.
