If there’s one thing that came out of CES this year, it’s that everyone, and I do mean everyone, wants a piece of the action that Apple absolutely dominates with the iPad right now. Tablets, tablets, tablet, tablets. We’ll see dozens upon dozens of them released this year. So how will Apple meet the onslaught? With the iOS 4.3 beta that just got pushed to developers today, it looks like we may have a first glimpse of the answer. One that may also point to the big answer: iPad 2.
As Macstories points out, a part of the iOS 4.3 beta looks to be new gesture support for the iPad. As they write:
It looks like iOS 4.3 has some cool new gestures built specifically for the iPad. 4 & 5 finger gestures; pinch to the home screen, swipe up to reveal multitasking tray, swipe left/right to switch apps.
Engadget snagged a picture of the settings for this.
Simply put: for hardcore iPad users, this is excellent news. It means that multitasking on the device will get a huge kick in the pants. What used to take a few somewhat tedious button clicks and touches of the screen can now be doing via swiping with the correct finger orientation.
Apple has a history of releasing multi-touch touch products with limited support for gestures, then adding new ones. This was the case with the original multi-touch trackpads, which gained new gestures over time. Now they’re doing it with the iPad as well.
But what’s really interesting about this is the timing.
Why is Apple including these features in iOS 4.3 rather than waiting for iOS 5, which will presumably come later this year when Apple unveils a new iPhone? Perhaps it means that iOS 4.3 will be the software that the iPad 2 launches with. It’s pure speculation, but maybe Apple decided that they wanted to have just a few nifty new software features (such as gestures and the mute/orientation lock option) for the new iPad launch, but will put most of the focus on the new hardware at launch.
Maybe the iPad 2 unveiling will also serve as a iOS 5 roadmap, which Apple has done in the past as its own event, outlining what’s coming in the next iteration of the OS so developers can get ready. Perhaps Apple doesn’t need developers to get ready for these gestures because it seems as if they’ll be system level. As in, third-party developers probably won’t have access to the four and five finger multi-touch options so that Apple can ensure they work in the same way for the new level of multitasking.
It took Apple quite a bit of time to unify iOS across the iPhone/iPod touch and the iPad. So you have to believe they don’t want to fragment it again. So maybe the timeline is this:
iOS 4.2.5 will launch alongside the Verizon iPhone on February 3.
Then in February/March, we’ll see the iPad 2 launch with iOS 4.3 for all iOS devices. At that time, we’ll get an outline of what’s to come in iOS 5.
And iOS 5 will launch in June for all supported iOS devices alongside the iPhone 5.

BGR reports that, according to their source, iOS 4.3 will bring personal Hotspot feature to all iPhones in March, subject to the approval of individual carriers. If true, iOS 4.3 will support personal Hotspot out of the box, but it’s upto the carriers like AT&T to enable support for it.
Verizon iPhone 4, which is running a new iOS 4.2.5, comes with the support for turning the device into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot allowing up to five Wi-Fi devices to share the iPhone’s cellular data connection.
BGR also reports iOS 4.3 build version will be 8F5148b, baseband will be 04.08.00 and technical acceptance is planned for March.

The event held in New York City brought us the announcement of the much anticipated arrival of Apple iPhone on Verizon’s network.
Later, the partnership between Apple Inc. and Verizon Wireless was brought to the people and was introduced with Apple’s own COO Tim Cook.
The Verizon version of iPhone 4 has same features as the regular iPhone 4 on AT&T, including: FaceTime, Retina Display, 5 megapixel camera, HD video recording, A4 processor, App Store etc. The amazing phone is to on sale on February 10th and will be available for $199 (16GB version), and $299 (32GB version) on contract. The Verizon iPhone reveals that it runs iOS 4.2.5 and has Personal Hotspot built right into the Settings app. We are still unaware of this feature but this is how Apple states it:

FireCore team has come up with a PwnageTool like program to build custom jailbroken .ipsw files for your second-gen Apple TV. Like almost all jailbreaks for iOS 4.2.1, Seas0nPass jailbreak is also limited to tethered-boot for now.
Currently the jailbreak for the 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software is ‘tethered’. A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.
Before you proceed with the jailbreak, you will need the following:
A Micro-USB cable
iTunes 10.1.1
iOS 4.2.1 for Apple TV
Seas0nPass
All download links are posted at the end of this article.
Step 1: Download and launch Seas0nPass.
Step 2: Now select “Create IPSW” option to build your own custom jailbroken firmware for Apple TV.
Step 3: Now wait for Seas0nPass to download all the files required for creating custom firmware
Step 4: When prompted by Seas0nPass, connect your Apple TV using a micro-USB cable (leave power disconnected), and hold-down both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.
Step 5: iTunes should now open automatically to start the restore process.
Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete. Once done, your Apple TV will be jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1.
Since this is a tethered jailbreak, you will have to boot your Apple TV into “tethered-boot” mode for it to function in jailbroken state.
Note: The Apple TV must be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.
Step 1: Start Seas0nPass again and this time select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option.
Step 2: When prompted by Seas0nPass, connect the Apple TV to your computer via micro-USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light on Apple TV and then connect the power. Once both are connected, hold-down both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds for it to enter DFU mode.
Step 3: That’s it ! Seas0n Pass will now automatically complete the tethered boot. Once done, remove the micro-USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.
Required download links are as follows:
Download iOS 4.2.1 for Apple TV
Download iTunes 10.1.1 for Mac OS X
Download Seas0nPass for Mac OS X
